Sumika

Mika Nagao of Imizu, Japan holds her 18-month-old daughter, Sumika, at Children's Hospital in Lawrenceville on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014.  Sumika was one of the youngest patients to be transported from Japan on a ventricular assist device (VAD), which takes over the pumping action of the heart and offers lifesaving support, most often acting as a bridge to keep patients alive until donor hearts become available for transplantation. After the 16 hour flight from Japan to the United States, Sumika and her parents arrived at the Allegheny County Airport and were transported to Children’s Hospital by ambulance. The family received the news they had been waiting for in late May that Sumika would be getting a new heart. On May 30, Sumika received her heart and is doing exceptionally well.

Protest for Higher Wages

 Demonstrators are arrested along Penn Avenue in Wilkinsburg on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 4, 2014 after blocking traffic during a protest. Over 100 fast food workers marched through Wilkinsburg to the McDonalds along Penn Avenue to protest wages, demanding $15 an hour and the right to form unions.

Slim Forsythe

Slim Forsythe, 58, is photographed at Nieds Hotel, where he lives and performs, in Lawrenceville on Wednesday evening, Sept. 2, 2014.  Forsythe who works in the city's budget office has lived a colorful life, having worked as a lawyer, a self-published author, a volunteer at Mother Teresa's House of the Dying in Calcutta, an anti-nuke protester, a school bus driver, and many other endeavors.  On Aug. 29 Forsythe was inducted into the America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Iowa. Tony Hawk

Legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk and his Birdhouse Skateboards Team visited Pitcher Park Memorial Skatepark in Carnegie on Monday, Aug. 25, 2014.  The team visited the world-class skatepark as part of a pre-opening performance at the conclusion of their Midwest Birdhouse on the Road Tour.  The 17,000-square-foot skatepark is named in memory of Vincent and Stephen Pitcher, avid skateboarders, who drowned on a camping trip in 2008.
