Four-Alarm Fire by Justin Merriman

Firefighters battle a four-alarm fire along Ormsby and Hayes avenues in Mt. Oliver on Sunday afternoon, June 8, 2014. The fire destroyed at least six homes and heavily damaged five others.  More than 50 people were displaced by the fire.

Ride of Silence by Justin Merriman

The event honored bike riders who have been injured or killed on public roadways.  Iain was dragged under an SUV when a driver collided with him, failing to yield to oncoming traffic. The driver was released with only summary offenses. The Pittsburgh Ride of Silence is endorsed by Western Pennsylvania Wheelmen, Pittsburgh Major Taylor Cycling Club, Allegheny Cycling Association, Flock of Cycles, Pittsburgh Masters Velo Club, Bike Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh Babes on Bikes.

USS Requin by Justin Merriman

Retired U.S. Navy Capt. Robert Kaufman, 94, of McLean Virginia, a former executive officer on the USS Requin, joined the memorial aboard the submarine docked along the Ohio River at the Carnegie Science Center on Sunday.  Kaufman, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, served in the Navy for 34 years and the entirety of World War II. He was aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay and witnessed the surrender of Japan, ending the war in September of 1945.
