Hoover was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 110th Infantry Regiment, Pennsylvania National Guard, Connellsville, Pa. He died June 11 at FOB Bullard, Afghanistan, from wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device. His father Melvin "Sam" Hoover received the flag off of his son's casket and knelt down beside it to say his final goodbyes.
